Legislating God
Many Christians who hold interest in the political happenings of the United States of America seem to think that Christian morals should be legislated into law to prevent “legislating sin.” While to a large majority of Christians, this looks attractive and could be a way for them to spread Christianity, it only seems to be another way for certain Christian groups to attempt to force-feed the nation with Christianity. In a statement to a religious journal, Republican Katherine Harris claimed, “If you’re not electing Christians, then in essence you are going to legislate sin.” She goes on to cite such “sin” as legalizing abortion and gay marriage. Nowhere does the Bible specify that God’s followers are to put into legislation His laws. Instead, rather than being closed-minded and intolerant towards such things, the Bible does tell us to love everyone, regardless of social, economic, or even sexual status. This doesn’t mean that we can claim to love homosexuals and then turn around and condemn them for what they do. This means love them, accept them, and treat them just like you would treat any other person. Many Christians seem to view homosexuality as a disease to be destroyed. Trying to “destroy” homosexuality, in the end, won’t bring anyone to Christ. They will know we are Christians by our love. What kind of love are Christians showing today?
